The Joy of Living with Sculpture

Can works of art actually speak? Not through words, perhaps, but they speak volumes through emotion, meaning, beauty, and the subtle pleasure they bring to the senses.

As a sculptor, my passion for stone as an artistic medium has spanned a lifetime. From my early days wandering the Greek sculpture halls of the Art Institute of Chicago to the past fourteen years devoted to the practice and study of carving, I have developed a profound appreciation for the beauty, energy, and timelessness of natural stone.

I could speak endlessly about the allure of stone, but perhaps the simplest way to understand it is to pick up a smooth river rock and hold it in your hands. There is an immediate sensory connection — something grounding, calming, and deeply elemental.

One of the unexpected joys of being a sculptor is that I live surrounded by many of the original works I have created. They inhabit nearly every room of my home, offering a quiet sense of tranquility, stability, presence, and joy. To me, they carry not only the intention and love infused during their creation, but also the ancient frequency of the earth itself — something profoundly balancing in our often overstimulated modern lives.

They have become an aesthetic oasis of sorts, bringing the outside world inside. In the gardens, the sculptures create welcoming spaces where birds perch peacefully and lizards bask in the warmth of the afternoon sun. Indoors, they serve as visual anchors that continually invite reflection, stillness, and beauty into daily life.

Recently, one of my sculptures, Silent Flight, had the honor of being featured in a richly layered and sensual room at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach in Palm Beach, designed by acclaimed interior designer Erin Shakoor of Shakoor Interiors. It was a beautiful reminder of what art can do within a space — how it nourishes the senses, enriches atmosphere, and ultimately feeds the soul.
